Newport Local Health Office

Newport Local Health Office staff live in and serve our community – we are the local face of public health in the Upper Northeast Kingdom. We work in schools, at worksites, with your town offices and partner groups, and we serve individuals and families right in our office. We help pregnant people, new parents and young children to eat well and learn about nutrition, we provide oral health care and immunizations and we support programs and policies that help all people form healthy habits. We invite you to learn about the many ways we can help you, your family and your community be healthy.

Chronic Disease Prevention

We work with community organizations, municipal and regional planners, schools and health care providers. We begin with conversations to learn what is important to our community. From there, we find ways to weave in health and wellness improvements that fit the priorities of our towns, such as economic development.

Emergency Preparedness

We work with local, state, and federal partners to prepare for public health emergencies in Orleans and northern Essex Counties. We provide support and participate in hospital preparedness with North Country Hospital, help exercise hospital plans and serve on the NCH Emergency Preparedness Committee.

Medicine Distribution Sites Wanted

During certain public health emergencies, the Newport Local Health Office will set up a site for distributing medications. The site, called a “point of distribution” or POD site, helps the Health Department get medicine to people who need it as quickly as possible.

Are you a large local business or organization interested in becoming a distribution site? Contact our office at 802-334-6707.

Medical Reserve Corps

The Northeast Kingdom Medical Reserve Corps (NEK MRC) is a community-based program of volunteers who donate their time and expertise to promote healthy living throughout the year and to prepare for and respond to emergencies. Volunteers set up and staff first aid stations at events, provide first aid and help community members prepare for emergencies.

MRC volunteers strengthen our community’s health and resiliency in the face of an emergency. You do not need to be in the medical field to volunteer.
