Michael Hartman, Commissioner
Department of Mental Health

Michael Hartman, has more than 25 years of experience in the mental health and social work arena in Vermont. Commissioner Hartman joined the Health Department in December 2006, as deputy commissioner for mental health. In 2007, he was appointed commissioner of the newly created Department of Mental Health. Hartman provides overall leadership for all programmatic, administrative, and budgetary aspects of statewide community and institutional mental health services for both adults and children.

Prior to his tenure with the Health Department, Hartman served as the director of community rehabilitation and treatment/intensive care services at Washington County Mental Health Services, Incorporated in Montpelier. Hartman was also executive program director of Collaborative Solutions Corporation (CSC), a new service provider working to establish Second Spring, an 11-bed community recovery residential facility in Williamstown, Vermont .

Since 1998, Hartman has been an adjunct faculty member of the Southern New Hampshire University Program in Community Mental Health, Burlington site. Hartman is also a member of the board of directors of the Institute of Professional Practice and serves on the Victim Compensation Board of the Vermont Center for Crime Victim Services
