Mental Health Services
Hospitalization
Sometimes hospitalization serves a purpose for individuals that need a high level of medical care and safety. Doctors can usually admit people to hospitals in their area, or admission can be through the hospital emergency room.
Sometimes a person has to be admitted to a hospital on an involuntary (against their will) basis, and Vermont has designated four local general hospitals with psychiatric units for limited involuntary care.
In addition, Vermont State Hospital is available for individuals whose mental health needs cannot be met in local general hospitals. About 600 people are hospitalized each year on an involuntary basis. Hospitalization services are listed below:
- Local General Hospitals
- seventy-two-hour emergency involuntary holds
- limited partial hospitalization
- inpatient psychiatric services
- Vermont State Hospital
- inpatient psychiatric services
- forensic evaluations
- ongoing treatment
