BURLINGTON, VT—The Vermont Department of Health issued a notice on Tuesday afternoon, July 2, asking the person or persons who left a box of three baby raccoons at the Sandbar Wildlife Refuge residence on Sunday, June 30, to please call 1-800-640-4374.

The raccoons have been transferred to a wildlife rehabilitator, but the Health Department wants to talk to anyone who was in contact with the animals to evaluate any possible exposure to rabies. No information was left with the raccoons.

Rabies is a fatal disease that can be transferred from animals to people. Health officials continue to remind residents and visitors to enjoy wildlife, but to do it from a distance.

If you are concerned about a wildlife situation, call the USDA Rabies Hotline (1-800-4RABIES) or your local game warden.
