Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
Maps and Trends

Vermont tracks risk behaviors using a cell and landline telephone survey of adults called the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). The results are used to plan, support, and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention programs. These are used to track Department of Health goals, such as Healthy Vermonters 2020, and many other BRFSS data reports.

Thumbnail of InstantAtlas pageThe Vermont Department of Health routinely uses three geographies to assess population indicators at the local level: by county, by Health Department district office area, and by hospital service area (HSA). These links access our interactive InstantAtlas™ pages, with maps, tables and graphs for many health indicators using BRFSS and other data sources.

Healthy Vermonters 2020 Indicators
Healthy Vermonters 2020 is the public health initiative that assesses, plans, and sets goals for population health indicators that are guiding the work of public health through 2020. BRFSS is one data source included in this initiative. Indicators are organized by health topic such as 'Family Planning' or 'Physical Activity.'

These indicators relate to other areas of our public health mission, and include risk behaviors, chronic conditions and preventative screening.

Tips for Navigating the Data

Survey Data Margin of Error

With any survey data there is a margin of error. For the differences in the BRFSS results to represent something other than random variation, there should be a margin of at least five percentage points between areas. In instances where there are only a few survey interviews available, the difference should be 10 or more percentage points.
