The Potential of the Data Equals People Paradigm - a Human Centered Approach to Health/Behavioral Health Policy

It's easy to forget that behind all the data collected and used in healthcare there are individual human lives. How can we align the abstract and decisive concept of data with the complex reality of people?

The Data Equals People (DEP) Paradigm looks to help strengthen access to care and improve health outcomes by addressing service gaps and communications barriers related to language support, literacy and community needs. Data can be a powerful tool for advancing positive systemic change, improving both health and equality, but it must be handled responsibly and used to empower individuals and communities.

This training will dive into the values needed for DEP to succeed:

  • Patient-centered clinical care
  • Individual and community centered public health
  • Do no harm – the importance of using data to empower and to improve equity, adding agency rather than removing it

This session will be presented by Sal Valadez. Sal is a Mexican immigrant, high school drop-out, U.S. Army Veteran, and has served as executive director of several non-profits. He recently retired as the Representative for Diversity, Outreach and Marketing from the Laborers International Union of North America.
