Although it can be hard, with the right tools and support, you can do it. Whether you want to quit cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, smokeless tobacco/chew, heatless tobacco products, nicotine pouches or vaping devices (either traditional or disposable types), 802quits, Vermont’s free quit smoking and tobacco resource, is here to help.

*Some tobacco users also benefit from extended use of nicotine replacement therapy, an effective, approved and safe way to quit any form of tobacco product, even those that contain high levels of nicotine. Nicotine replacement therapy reduces withdrawal symptoms and increases quit success.

Not ready to quit? Create a smoke and vape-free home for your family, friends and pets

If you’re not ready to quit tobacco and nicotine yet, there are a lot of things you can do right now to help yourself and to protect your loved ones – especially children, who are the most vulnerable to the harmful effects of secondhand and thirdhand cigarette smoke and vape aerosol. Here are some steps to take:

  • Cut down on your smoking and vaping. To help you cut down, use a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) patch to reduce the cravings and symptoms of withdrawal. Many Vermonters get free NRT at 802quits.org.
  • Stop smoking and vaping in your house and your car, and ask others to do the same.
  • Create a designated smoking area away from common areas, pet living areas and play spots.
  • Never smoke or vape any substance when your children are present.

Resources for youth quitting tobacco or nicotine

We’ve put together a list of the best resources for youth looking to quit tobacco and nicotine:

  • My Life My Quit: This free and confidential texting program, developed by a leading respiratory hospital, helps young people ages 12-17 quit all forms of smoking or vaping. Text "Start My Quit" to 36072 or visit the website to chat with a trained coach.
  • Smokefree Teen: This website, created by the FDA, offers tips and resources to help teens quit smoking and give up nicotine.
  • quitSTART: This mobile app, available for Android and Apple iOS, gives tips, inspiration and challenges for teens to quit.
  • This is Quitting: A free and anonymous texting program for teens and young adults. Try it out by texting DITCHVAPE to 88709.
  • Contact your pediatrician to discuss options and medications for quitting.
  • Contact your local school to see what youth-centered quit groups or programs are offered.
