Newer Psychoactive Substances and Contaminants in the U.S. Drug Supply

Fred Rottnek, MD, Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at SSM Health Saint Louis University School of Medicine will discuss regulated and unregulated substance that are present in the U.S. drug supply chain as well as retail outlets throughout the U.S. In this common language presentation, participants will learn about risks and benefits of these substances, ways to prevent or reduce problematic use, and how individual behavior may be affected by use of these substances. The session will conclude with public- and professional-facing resources for participants to learn more about the topic.

Learning objectives:

• Describe newer psychoactive substances and contaminants in the U.S. drug supply, including 7-OH (mirtragynine), kratom, nitazines, xylazine, and medetomidine
• Discuss why and how these substances present in the drug supply
• Describe the presentation of individuals who present under the influence of these drugs
• Discuss best practices in treating individuals with problematic use of these substances
• Identify resources for additional learning about these substances for the treatment team, including clients and their families
