Optimizing Protocols for Care of Clients with SUD with or at Risk for Viral Infections
Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) are at increased risk for contracting HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Addiction professionals are well positioned to encourage and incorporate pan-viral screening for all 3 infections into practice. Linking patients to care for either treatment or prevention is a critical next step, and close partnerships should be formed between addiction professionals and clinics. Regular contact with patients with SUD can help encourage retention in care for those who have HIV, HCV, or HBV. In this webinar, Dr. Ellen Eaton will review available tests for HIV, HBV, and HCV; provide guidance on identifying where triple screening fits into a clinic’s workflow; prepare addiction professionals to refer patients in need of treatment or additional prevention measures; and review strategies to encourage retention in care.
