Screening, Brief Intervention, & Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) uses primary and secondary prevention approaches to identify and intervene with individuals whose pattern of substance use puts them at risk for or are experiencing substance-related health problems. SBIRT as a best practice can also identify and refer people who are at very high risk for substance use disorders.
This course will review the components of SBIRT, including validated instruments to screen for substance use, key communication strategies of a brief intervention, and the critical aspects of successfully referring someone to specialized care.
