The Intersection Between Substance Misuse Prevention and Mental Health In Youth
Adolescent substance misuse, mental health challenges, and suicide risk are deeply interconnected. Many young people use alcohol or drugs to cope with depression, anxiety, trauma, or overwhelming stress, yet substance use can intensify emotional distress, increase impulsivity, and heighten suicide risk. When these issues are addressed separately, critical opportunities for prevention are missed. This workshop explores how these challenges intersect and how anyone who works with youth can recognize risk, strengthen protective factors, and respond in ways that support youth well-being and help save lives.
Workshop Goal: Strengthen the capacity of educators, prevention professionals, school staff, and community-based providers to recognize and respond to the interconnected risks of adolescent substance misuse, mental health challenges, and suicide.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain how substance use, mental health challenges, and suicide risk intersect in youth.
- Recognize shared risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs.
- Identify practical, role-specific strategies to strengthen connection, resilience, and early intervention in school and community settings.
- Describe appropriate referral pathways and supports for youth at elevated risk.
