The Adverse Impacts of Cannabis Use on Adolescents and Young Adults: Understanding the Science, Addressing the Issues

This presentation will provide an update on our current understanding of cannabis use trends among young people, the proliferation and risks of high-potency THC products, how cannabis use is related to student academic performance, behavioral health and addiction. A general framework for cannabis use prevention and early intervention will be described. Specific strategies to address cannabis among youth and young adults will be discussed, especially ones that are appropriate for educational settings (e.g., high school and college).

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize recent data regarding cannabis use trends among adolescents and young adults.
  • Recognize the importance of addressing current misperceptions regarding cannabis use.
  • Describe the relationship between cannabis use, academic performance, and behavioral health.
  • Discuss prevention and intervention strategies that can be implemented to reduce cannabis use and intervene early with students who have initiated cannabis use.
