Prescribing Buprenorphine in the Era of Fentanyl & New Psychoactive Substances
The opioid epidemic is rapidly evolving due to the widespread presence of fentanyl and complex polysubstance use. This creates major challenges in treating Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Buprenorphine is a vital Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), offering a safer treatment alternative due to its unique pharmacology and ceiling effect, which limits overdose risk.
However, effectively treating patients with polysubstance use disorder (PSUD) requires specialized clinical strategies. This session will review how buprenorphine works and, critically, how to adapt initiation and maintenance protocols for these complex patients. We will focus on advanced strategies, including low-dose (micro) and high-dose (macro) initiation, to safely stabilize and retain patients in treatment, leading to long-term recovery.
