What Supervisors Need to Know about Peer Support Supervision: What Peer Support Is and What It Is Not
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services require that peer support workers be supervised by a qualified mental health professional, as defined by each state. This requirement has often proven challenging for both peer support staff and the non-peer supervisors who, in many cases, have never occupied—or fully understood—the peer support role.
As peer support workers have moved toward integrating their practice into traditional service settings, supervisors have simultaneously worked to understand how to support and oversee a role unfamiliar to them. Today, many advocates and peer support practitioners have raised concerns about misalignment with the core values of peer support, and “peer drift” has become pervasive.
