Dental health is key to our overall health and well-being and affects both physical health and mental health. It affects how we grow, enjoy life, look, speak, chew, taste food and socialize. Poor dental health is linked to heart disease, diabetes and preterm and low birth weight. A healthy smile for life starts with healthy habits like brushing and flossing, using fluoride, making smart food choices and eating habits, and visiting the dentist twice yearly. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood, and it is preventable.

Public Health Dental Hygienist

The Newport Local Health Office has a Public Health Dental Hygienist to help with tooth decay prevention. She connects people to a dental practice for ongoing care, known as a dental home, which every child should have by their first birthday.  To find a dentist near you, use Vermont State Dental Association search tool or the Vermont Medicaid search tool.

We support the promotion of and access to dental health services for pregnant women and children enrolled in the WIC program. Learn more about WIC Services. During a WIC visit, our dental hygienist can provide dental health education and fluoride and tell you whether more care is needed.

802 Smiles / Community Dental Program

Several schools in the Northeast Kingdom participate in Vermont’s 802 Smiles program. The 802 Smiles Network of School Dental Health Programs connects Vermont's various school dental health programs under one umbrella. Its goal is to eliminate oral health disparities and improve oral health for all Vermont children.
