Health Impacts and Cost of Chronic Disease in Vermont

This brief highlights the health and financial impacts of chronic disease in Vermont. In 2022, approximately 62% of deaths were due to chronic disease, at least 6 in 10 Vermonters are living with one or more chronic diseases, and Vermont residents and healthcare payers spent at least one billion dollars for treatment of chronic disease. The brief also acknowledges barriers many Vermonters face to chronic disease prevention such as food insecurity and the high cost of health care. The Division of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention works to both reduce risk factors in Vermont and to build support for those living with chronic disease.
