What Supervisors Need to Know About Peer Support Supervision: The Foundations of Successful Supervision
In 2007, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) determined that peer recovery support was a best practice in substance use disorder treatment, and thus reimbursable by Medicaid. The supervision of peer support specialists has generated great interest since that determination. Subsequent guidance from CMS suggested that peer support workers be supervised by a qualified mental health professional as determined by each state.
What followed was an increase in literature on the barriers and challenges of integrating peers into multi-disciplinary teams, where they were now receiving supervision. Most of that literature suggested supervision as a remedy to these barriers and challenges. Within the growing focus on peer supervision across the country, there are national efforts to understand and align supervision with peer support values; these strategies are critical to the success of the peer support workforce, whether at a peer-run organization or on an integrated, multi-disciplinary team in a traditional service setting.
This webinar lays the basis of successful multi-disciplinary supervision of peer support services. It provides a perspective for successful supervision, incorporating research-based tools and skills into supervision, and dispels some of the myths surrounding peer supervision practice.
