Impact of Trauma in Relation to Substance Use Disorder
Substance use disorder and trauma are closely connected—nearly 75% of individuals with SUD have a history of trauma, and some experts believe the rate is even higher. Many turn to substances as a way to cope with emotional pain, but this can also intensify trauma symptoms and hinder recovery. In this training, we’ll explore the behaviors linked to coping with trauma through substance use, review risk and protective factors for SUD, and discuss the impact of both “big T” and “little t” trauma. We’ll also examine how physical trauma responses can show up as flashbacks, nightmares, or physical symptoms.
Participants will be able to:
- List some behaviors that can result from the impact of substances and trauma.
- Recall protective and vulnerability factors for SUD.
- Differentiate examples of BIG T and little t trauma.
- List at least three examples of physical reactions to trauma.
