From High School to College: Protecting Your Student from Alcohol Risks

The important role of parents in preventing alcohol and other substance use among youth is well recognized. When youth separate from home environments to attend college, access and availability to alcohol and other substances increase, and proximity to parents and their guidance inherently decreases. This presentation will focus on the enduring impacts of parents on excessive drinking behaviors of college students and why parents need to stay vigilant and communicate with their grown children about drinking during their college years. Specific strategies for parents will be described that have been shown to reduce college student risk.

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the ways in which parents can influence the drinking behavior of their children.
  • Discuss compelling reasons for parents to maintain constructive communication about substance use during college.
  • Dispel myths about the normative nature of college drinking and substance use.
  • Provide specific strategies for parents and other trusted adults to help reduce risk for excessive drinking.
