Policy Action Micro Academy: From Readiness to Policy Implementation

The Policy Action Micro Academy is an advanced-level, comprehensive, four-session virtual training designed to equip decision-makers and key influencers in the field of substance misuse prevention with the skills and knowledge needed to write evidence-based, population-level policies and advocate for meaningful policy change. Participants will delve into the intricacies of creating and managing policy development in the context of working with organizations committed to advancing population-level change.

Throughout the Micro Academy, they will work on developing a policy initiative of their choosing, with the goal of reducing substance misuse in their communities. Between sessions, they will have the opportunity to engage in Coaching Sessions that provide intensive technical assistance, allowing them to refine their policy work, receive personalized guidance, and navigate real-world challenges.

This academy will empower participants to develop evidence-based policies, foster organizational readiness, and take systematic steps toward creating policies that promote healthier communities and address substance misuse.

By the end of this academy, participants will be able to

  • Evaluate and refine their organizational structure and membership readiness to engage in an alcohol, tobacco, or other drug (ATOD) policy campaign
  • Describe activities associated with the evidence-based 10-step Policy Campaign process and apply them in a practice setting
  • Explain the difference between media awareness and media advocacy strategies and describe how media can support policy change
  • Analyze the role of community member support in advancing policy change
  • Design a strategy to promote the implementation of a newly adopted policy to support population-level change
